Turn Mentoring Into Your Super Power

Have you ever considered what makes us feel encouraged about our careers? In today's HerCsuite™ Radio episode, we explore how mentoring has become the new currency for companies to recruit and retain female talent and why women, more than ever before, need to feel more optimistic and supported in the workplace.

If this episode had been created a few months ago, the discussion might be different. We had a more optimistic outlook about returning to a hybrid or in-person work solution. Companies were looking forward to seeing employees in-person. Women felt relieved, that school would be in session and things might get back to ‘normal'.

Flash forward to today, not only are we finding ourselves in a ‘groundhog day like moment', we are also having an incredible increase in stress and anxiety. Companies struggle with how to align their internal values with the external realities about what is happening in the world. Employees, and women in particular, are feeling the strain.

5 Reasons Women Need Mentoring

1. Current Workplace Environment for Impact on Women

In 2020, more than 2 million women left the workforce. The overall employee numbers resigning are even bigger this year, from April-June, 2021, 11.5 million workers left the workforce.

2. The ‘Great Resignation' is Real

You may either be thinking about it, have people on your team, in your organization or clients who have been part of the great departure from work. The toughest reality is there aren't people to fill the positions vacated. It becomes a self-fulling scenario; women already feel over worked, and when one person leaves, they are often times picking up the pieces.

3. Women are Feeling The Pressure

A Recent Deloitte Survey of 5,000 women reported:

  • 51% Feel Less Optimistic About Their Careers
  • 57% Say They Will Leave Their Job Within 2 Years
  • 77% Say Their Workload Increased

In this changing environment, where are women going for advice and support? There are 171 Million women on LinkedIn and 1,300 women groups. If you search women organizations online, over 120 Million options come up. The issue isn't that women aren't looking for help; it is that they aren't finding what they need.

Companies and their female employees need mentoring now, more than ever.

4. Mentoring Programs Add Value to Organizations

Mentoring Helps Companies and Employees

  • 67% of businesses reported an increase in productivity due to mentoring.
  • 55% of businesses felt that mentoring had a positive impact on their profits.
  • 93% of small and medium sized businesses acknowledge that mentoring can help them to succeed.
  • 56% of all U.S. companies have some form of mentoring.

Mentoring, when done right, gives employees and employers the tools and encouragement to stay engaged.

HerCsuite™was started after listening to women share their stories. They didn't know who to turn to for advice and who they could trust. I remembered my own experience, when I felt the same way, until I joined a mentoring circle, and it literally changed my world.

5. Mentoring Results – A Personal Story

In 2012, I had been part of an organization called the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association (HBA) Chicago and was serving as the Board Secretary. At the time, the company I really loved, decided to move 2 hours away…and remote work wasn't really an option.

Sound familiar with today's scenario of back to work mandates? It is a tough environment for companies and employees alike.

Although I am a speaker on confidence and women empowerment, when it came to navigating difficult conversations, I found it difficult to do. I joined a mentoring program, and really cherished group meetings. It gave me a safe space, and there were 2 mentors and 5 mentees. I have remained friends with the amazing women who helped me.

Here was my success outcome: I quit my job. I started a new role, and most importantly I gained confidence. I showed up. I contributed. The biggest thing that happened, was this was the turning point to my being here with you today. I was nominated to be President-elect and eventually became President of HBA Chicago. It was then, that I discovered my passion.

Today it has become my purpose to help organizations and women feel more optimistic, have greater job satisfaction, and find work-life balance. After a year of testing, HerCsuite™platform is focused on driving outcomes through advisory and mentoring.

What happens when you have the right support?

Mentoring can improve the mentees’ ability to resolve challenges and in the case of business mentoring; the ability to stay in business for the longer term.

Now, it's your turn. You are ready to turn Mentoring into your Superpower.
